The region along the river Emscher is the industrial heart of the Ruhr area, which could conserve its unique character until now. Here in the north – nowadays named “the New Emscher Valley” – the Ruhr Area had its beginnings. The heartland of the Ruhr Area had been here and the River Emscher was its black soul.

First the coal mining, iron and steel industries pullulated. Industries and mining defined the look of the cities and dominated the lifestyle of the people. The uncontrolled development and the resulting urbanistic sore spots are still visible. However, the picture changes completely with the transformation of the Emscher river, an ongoing project for the rest of the decade, managed by the Emscher cooperative society. Nowadays major sections of the Emscher are no longer foul-smelling wastewater drains, but a nice river which soon will flow through new parks and residential areas.

Today the former industrial “badges of shame” are presented proudly to foreign visitors as “cathedrals of work”. However, the surroundings remained almost unknown. Up to now, there have been only rudimental approaches to present industrial monuments in conjunction with their surroundings. Emscher-Expeditions should change this now. The organizers define figuratively the “New Escher Valley” as an expedition zone and promise each participant to experience exceptional places, bizarre meetings and surprising discoveries.

“Zollverein Touristik” is a project of the tourist association “Kulturlandschaft Zollverein (cultural landscape Zollverein)” intending to promote tourism in the urban districts Katernberg, Stoppenberg and Schonnebeck in the city of Essen. Its ambition is to create opportunities for the local residents to participate in the economic potential arising from the continuously growing number of visitors of the UNESCO world heritage Zollverein. These activities result on one side in the generation of new and additional job opportunities in the service sector and on the other side in an upgrade of these structurally weak districts.
“Zollverein Touristik” gives the local residents the chance to participate actively in the development of tourism in their quarters.

The tourism association, founded in 1988, offers the booking of bed & breakfast under the motto “Übernachten unterm Förderturm (stay overnight underneath the pit frame)” and nowadays of hotel rooms as well. Another focus is the organisation of day and bike-tours for groups, in the neighbourhood of Zollverein and in the Ruhr Area.
