Short tour around the UNESCO world heritage site Zollverein colliery |
|
Zollverein XII colliery is an impressive testimony to modern industrial architecture. Since its shutdown in 1986, the industrial complex has been transformed into an art-, culture- and design-site that domiciles today the design centre of North Rhine-Westphalia, many private businesses and the Ruhrmuseum. Being designated UNESCO World Cultural Heritage in 2001, Zollverein symbolises a successful combination of monument conservation, economic promotion and urban development nowadays. |

The former boiler house of Zollverein colliery was redesigned for the North Rhine-Westphalian Design Centre and the red dot design museum by the British architect Lord Norman Foster. Visitors can view modern trendsetting design in a breath-taking setting of an authentic ambiance. The museum-like atmosphere of the building is mostly the result of its impressive architecture. |

The commented tour takes you through the city to the south of Essen. |
|
The boulevard “Huyssenallee” connects the city centre with the quarter called Rüttenscheid. Along this street one can view an impressive ensemble located at the park “Stadtgarten” consisting of the “RWE Tower” (office/architects Ingenhoven-Overdiek), the opera house “Aalto-Theatre” and the concert hall of the “Philharmonie Essen” (office/architects Busmann+Haberer). In its extension “Rüttenscheider”-street commences with its great variety of shops, restaurants, bars and cafes. |

Visit of Villa Hügel with its permanent historical collection of the Krupp family. |
|
“Villa Hügel“, located in Essen, was built in the last but one century. The representative building shelters in its former guest house the “Krupp” historical collection and displays on “Krupp Today”. The main building houses exhibitions and cultural events on a regular basis. The dimensions and architecture as well as the huge park demonstrate and illustrate the lordship and self-conception of the large scale manufacturers in the Ruhr area in the 19th century. |

Short walk through the residential area Margarethenhöhe. |
|
Employees’ residential area “Margarethenhöhe” at Essen. The construction period of this residential area designed for the employees of the company Krupp and the city of Essen took more than 20 years. Initialized by a donation of Bertha Krupp, the construction works started in 1911 according to the drafts of the architect Metzendorff. In 1986 the area was declared a historic monument, today it allows to rediscover various aspects of the original idea of garden cities. |

After a short bus transfer we will visit the current exhibition in the Gasometer. |
|
The Gasometer in Oberhausen is a relict of a vast industrial zone. The steel cylinder of the former disc-type gas holder towers 117.6 meters up into the sky. Inside, the visitor experiences a unique exhibition space of humongous dimensions. A glass elevator takes you up to the roof where you are able to enjoy the panoramic view of the western part of the Emscher area. |

|
In 1996 the “CentrO Oberhausen”, Europe’s largest shopping complex, opened its doors – a spectacular project that has been built on the site of the former foundry mill “Gute Hoffnungshütte GHH”. The centre of the city shifted from the old one to this new world of commerce consisting of a shopping and a gastronomic mile. |

Walk around the inner harbour to the wharf “Schwanentor”. |
|
The inner harbour of Duisburg. A housing- and service-park grows in and in-between the former storehouses and flour mills right next to Duisburg’s inner harbour. “Work, live, enjoy the culture and leisure activities at the waterfront”. The quarter situated close to the city centre owes its quality due to solid planning and architecture as well as to the “Garden of remembrance” by Dani Karavan. The separated part of the port basin may be used as sports- and play-ground. |

The inland harbour of Duisburg. Starting at “Schwanentor” wharf, the commented tour takes us through Europe’s largest inland harbour and along the roads of the Rhine to the former fishing village Ruhrort. Here it becomes obvious that significant transformations took place in the harbours as well due to the decline in the coal-, iron- and steel-industries. |

North Duisburg landscape park, a blast furnace site changed into a discovery-landscape. While nature takes control of the 250 ha industrial area, the shutdown facilities get revitalized as well. Climbers face the challenges in the ore bins, divers explore flooded cellar systems, and cultural events take place amidst industrial ambiance. At night everything changes into a fascinating light sculpture that you can walk through. |

Short promenade to the “Serra Bramme“ with an impressive panorama of the central Ruhr area. |
|
“Halde Schurenbach”, a spoil heap with Richard Serra’s steel slab dedicated to the Ruhr area. The American sculptor Richard Serra formed here “his own” artificial hill – landscaping of insistent simplicity. The slab, 64 tons of steel and 15 meter high, stands up stringent and archaic, almost perpendicular, in the middle of the black surface on top of the spoil heap. It is one of the most powerful places of art in the Ruhr area. |

It is the most important Museum of Coal Mining in the world and at the same time a well recognized research institute concerning the history of mining and steel producing industries. Exhibits include an underground ‘insight mine’ and many displays in the buildings above grounds. |
