Suggested agenda
Morning
approx. 08:00-10:00
Visit of the current exhibition in the Gasometer.
The Gasometer in Oberhausen is a relict of a vast industrial zone. The steel cylinder of the former disc-type gas holder towers 117.6 meters up into the sky. Inside, the visitor experiences a unique exhibition space of humongous dimensions. A glass elevator takes you up to the roof where you are able to enjoy the panoramic view of the western part of the Emscher area.
The transfer to “Villa Hügel” passes by the major sights of the city of Essen.
The boulevard “Huyssenallee” connects the city centre with the quarter called Rüttenscheid. Along this street one can view an impressive ensemble located at the park “Stadtgarten” consisting of the “RWE Tower” (office/architects Ingenhoven-Overdiek), the opera house “Aalto-Theatre” and the concert hall of the “Philharmonie Essen” (office/architects Busmann+Haberer). In its extension “Rüttenscheider”-street commences with its great variety of shops, restaurants, bars and cafes.
Visit to Villa Hügell
“Villa Hügel“, located in Essen, was built in the last but one century. The representative building shelters in its former guest house the “Krupp” historical collection and displays on “Krupp Today”. The main building houses exhibitions and cultural events on a regular basis. The dimensions and architecture as well as the huge park demonstrate and illustrate the lordship and self-conception of the large scale manufacturers in the Ruhr area in the 19th century.
